(Carson City, NV; January 27, 2017) – Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske announced today that Renaldo Johnson of Las Vegas, Nevada was arrested pursuant to a warrant issued by Chief Judge David Barker, Eighth Judicial District Court of Clark County.
Johnson was indicted on fifteen felony counts related to his work as a signature gatherer on the Nevada Green Party Ballot Access Petition. These charges include six counts of Misconduct in Signing, Filing or Altering Petition for willfully signing the name of another person without lawful authority, six counts of Obtaining and Using Personal Identifying Information of Another alleging that he knowingly obtained and used personal identifying information of another person for an unlawful purpose, and three counts of Perjury alleging that he declared that a petition to qualify the Nevada Green Party for general election ballot access contained signatures affixed in his presence, knowing this statement to be false.
“Enforcing Nevada's election laws which ensures the integrity of the petition process is a fundamental responsibility of this office,” stated Secretary Cegavske.
An arrest serves as the enforcement of an issued warrant; every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Criminal Investigators with the Secretary of State’s office investigated this matter and the case is being prosecuted by the Nevada Attorney General's office.
