Initiatives & Referenda

Constitutional Initiatives
Pursuant to Article 19, section 2(4) of the Nevada Constitution and NRS 295.015 and 295.009, constitutional initiative petitions to appear on the 2012 General Election ballot may be filed on or after September 1, 2011. To qualify for the ballot, petitioners must obtain the signatures of registered voters that equals at least 10 percent of the voters who voted at the last preceding General Election, or 72,352 signatures. The signatures must be gathered in each of the four Congressional Districts. The last preceding general election for all petitions submitted in 2012 is considered the 2010 general election.  Therefore, 72,352 valid signatures are required to qualify petition submitted in 2012.  Of the 72,352 signatures, 18,088 must be collected in each of Congressional Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4. All sufficient Constitutional Initiatives must be returned to the Office of the Secretary of State not later than August 8, 2012, to appear on the November 6, 2012, General Election ballot.

Statutory Initiatives
Pursuant to Article 19, section 2(3) of the Nevada Constitution and NRS 295.015 and 295.009, statutory initiative petitions to appear on the 2014 General Election ballot may be filed on or after January 1, 2012. To qualify for the ballot, petitioners must obtain the signatures of registered voters that equals at least 10 percent of the voters who voted at the last preceding General Election, or 72,352 signatures. The signatures must be gathered in each of the four Congressional Districts. The last preceding general election for all petitions submitted in 2012 is considered the 2010 general election. Therefore, 72,352 valid signatures are required to qualify petition submitted in 2012. Of the 72,352 signatures, 18,088 must be collected in each of Congressional Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4. All sufficient Statutory Initiatives must be returned to the Office of the Secretary of State not later than November 13, 2012,  to be transmitted to the 2013 Legislature for consideration prior to placement on the ballot in 2014.

Referendum
Pursuant to Article 19, section 1 of the Nevada Constitution, petitions for referendum to appear on the 2012 General Election ballot may be filed on or after August 1, 2011. To qualify for the ballot, petitioners must obtain the signatures of registered voters that equal at least 10 percent of the number of voters who voted at the last preceding General Election, or 72,352 signatures. Of the 72,352 signatures, 18,088 must be collected in each of Congressional Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4.  All petitions for referenda must be returned to the Office of the Secretary of State not later than July 9, 2012, to appear on the November 6, 2012, General Election Ballot.
